Nose to Mouth Lines
Young skin is elastic, firm and smooth. Over time sun exposure, smoking, genetic or environmental factors contribute to the signs of ageing. As we age we also lose a vital substance in the skin, hyaluronic acid. This naturally occurring substance is responsible for binding water and hydrates the skin, giving it volume. As we lose hyaluronic acid the ability of our skin to retain water decreases leading to the skin becoming thinner and looser leading to wrinkles and folds.
Our skin has three layers – the epidermis, the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the outer layer and protects against heat and cold. The epidermis also determines how your skin looks and also how well it absorbs and holds moisture. The dermis, or middle layer, acts as a support structure, it is the thickest layer and comprises a network of collagen and elastin fibres. The subcutaneous layer consists of fat and helps keep us warm.
What causes lines and wrinkles?
The dermis is the layer responsible for the skin elasticity and contains substances which help retain moisture; one of these is hyaluronic acid, which reduces with age. Treatment of affected areas involves the replacement of the naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid with a “filler” based on a natural (non-animal derived) substance similar to hyaluronic acid found in the skin.
